A Forgotten War with Devastating Consequences
The speakers – including Saeed Maissara (Umbaja e.V.), Dr. Aamir Dean (GAAKT e.V.), and peace activist Dr. Ishraga Mustafa Hamid – and Vincenzo Grauso (Land der zwei Nile e.V.) described in poignant detail the dramatic situation in Sudan. Since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, more than 12 million people have been displaced, 25 million suffer from acute hunger, and the health system has collapsed. “This is the world’s largest displacement crisis – and yet the international community looks away,” emphasized Maissara.
Dr. Dean, who personally witnessed the war, spoke of a “parallel world” in which the affected remain invisible: “If now is not the time to support the Sudanese people – then when?” Dr. Mustafa Hamid added with an appeal to policymakers: “Peace is not the goal, but the path. We need humanitarian aid, not weapons.”
Demands on Germany and the World
The “Voices of Sudan” campaign presented clear expectations to the German government:
-
Emergency Aid: Financial support for UN agencies and NGOs to fight hunger and disease.
-
Diplomatic Initiatives: Prioritizing Sudan in German Africa policy, mediating ceasefires, and imposing sanctions on war criminals.
-
Asylum Policy: Faster procedures and safe pathways for Sudanese refugees.
-
Diaspora Involvement: Institutionalized partnerships to ensure Sudanese voices are included in political decision-making.

A Call to Action
The press conference marked the launch of a broader campaign that will continue until 2026 with public actions and events – including a conference on situation in Sudan in December. “Sudan must not be forgotten,” said Maissara. “Behind every statistic is a human being with dreams, deserving dignity and security.”
The message of the event was clear: immediate international solidarity is needed to save lives and pave the way for peace. The German public and media are called upon to amplify these voices – so that the suffering in Sudan no longer remains in the shadows.
